Sometimes I Don’t Feel, 100% Black
©  2016  Sy’needa Penland

Race is a label,
a mentality,
not a culture;

of the Spirit,
weakening of the
Soul’s core;
Mental enslavement
of the Mind
once more;

Torn from sacred roots,
reigning from the deltas
along the ivory shores.

Sacred streams
along her Nile,
the most fertile
of her darkest isles.

Her people.
Her soil.
Her blood.
Her bile.

Rich is her core.
Crystal erosions
of Mother Time;
Remnants of the
Great Divine;

Her people,
shall reclaim
her essence
once more.

To feel black,
Is to be black!
No matter where you are!

Beautiful and inspiring, as always thought provoking. Thank you for sharing.

What is the release date of your next poetry book and do you plan on making a debut to be part of the spoken word network?

Thank you. This is one of my favorites, along with RAPE, which is also featured in my next collection. It addresses a topic that is near and dear to my heart. The piece was inspired after a dear friend shared with me that his 11-year old daughter was molested by her best friend who wanted to show her what it’s like to be a lesbian, because her mother is a lesbian?! When he shared his story I cried and the lyrics began to flow out of me… You can listen to the recording on my Youtube channel,

I plan on releasing my next collection in February, as a dedication to my grandmother, may she forever Rest in Peace.

I'm not an actor or performer so I'm not sure if I will “join” the Spoken Word network, but that is a thought that I'm open to entertain. The world can never have enough poets. ;)

Poetry is therapy for me and to recite my pieces to others will be more therapeutic. ;)
